From Living In A Jeep To Living In A Mansion
Hi,
My
Willie Jolley Wealthy Ways guest this week is someone who helps
others become wealthy. And he’s my friend – John Hope Bryant.
He’s
the founder and CEO of Operation Hope and hosts the HOPE Global Forums, where
nearly 5,000 delegates representing over 40 countries gathered for its 9th
annual event in the Fall of 2022.
I
was pleased to be a speaker at this standing-room-only conference where world
leaders and influencers from government, community and private sectors share
best practices and collaborate.
John
Hope Bryant, a philanthropist, entrepreneurial leader in the business of
empowerment, is the founder, chairman, and CEO of Operation Hope. It is
America's first nonprofit social investment banking organization.
I
asked, I begged, and I pleaded with John to join me on my show again, after
hearing him at the HOPE Global Forum where he shared more of his personal
story.
John’s
first book, Love
Leadership, explains in detail his entrepreneurial struggle from South
Central Los Angeles.
From
his riveting setbacks come his 18 “in your face” ideas that transformed him into
the driven and giving success he is today:
- You
make money during the day. You build wealth in your sleep.
- If
two or three families can live together in harmony that household can save
money.
- The
number one way that the average family builds wealth is through home ownership.
But only 41% of Black people own a home.
- Learn
from a role model. Find one.
- Focus
on the paycheck. If you sign it on the front, you are the owner, and you wrote
the check. If you sign the back, you’re cashing the check that someone else
wrote to you.
- Don’t
just be the entertainer, own the entertainment.
- "Wake
up! If you think you're an entertainer, and you don't own the music or
publishing rights, you're actually not in the music business. You're just a
temporary performer.” –
Quincy Jones
- Our
problem is not racism or bias, police brutality, or even the Ku Klux Klan. It’s
our credit score. It locks us out of the free enterprise system. The bank is
forced to tell you NO!
- Rich
people are paid by wealthy people.
- Watch
who you “roll” with. They become your model. You model what you see. Hang out
with folks smarter and wiser than you.
- Dating?
After polite conversation, ask their credit score. If you end up marrying them,
they become your business partner for the rest of your life – for better or
worse!
- Education
first. Career skill second. Buy a home. Then marry. Then have children – in that
order.
- Practice
singer James Brown’s version of affirmative action, “Open the door. I'll get it
myself.”
- Make
sure nobody stands between you and your objectives. You can be generous with
your money but be ruthless about your time.
