We
had a setback last week. A system glitch prevented my planned show from airing.
It was a special message focused on helping you survive and thrive through this
coronavirus.
Those
principles are taken from my book, Turn
Setbacks Into Greenbacks.
But
never fear! I was able to get them to replay last week’s show this week.
In
addition, this week’s video message includes lessons I got from the conversation
I had this morning with my mentor, 90 plus-year-old professional speaking icon,
Dave Yoho. I call him "Pop."
During
our long talk, Pop said the reason he's requested as a consultant by so many
companies is that they know he's been "through the fire" and is able to stand
the heat! He's seen challenges. He’s seen crises. And he’s learned the secrets
to survive and thrive through them all!
Pop
was a child during the Great Depression, and learned how his parents survived
the greatest economic crisis America had ever seen.
At
the age of 15, he dropped out of high school and falsified his birth certificate
so he could fight in World War II. Enlisting in the Merchant Marines, he was
sent off to war. Pop experienced raging battles and the emotional tolls of war.
He
returned to still having to earn his high school diploma, worked to support his
family–and went to college at night–five nights a week!
Pop
Yoho built a number of successful companies and became a millionaire. Yet he saw
his business adversely impacted after 9/11 and again during the 2008 economic
crisis.
He
lost a good bit of his fortune, but refused to let it shake him. Pop used the
lessons learned from all the earlier crises and recovered. He still works–5 days
a week–8 hours a day!
Plus,
he works out every morning, for over an hour, in the gym!
Pop’s
lessons to us are:
- It’s
all about your attitude
- Dig
your well before you’re thirsty–work on your attitude!
- Read
and listen to positive material to keep you motivated.
- Remember,
the best time to plant a tree was 25 years ago! The second best time is now! Get
started working on your attitude
- Be
willing to not just go through the heat, but GROW from it.
