Update From the Road

November 2023

During the Month of November We Continued to Honor our Veterans

Two major car repairs were completed for veterans as part of our Vehicles for Veterans program

along with LoriAnn receiving her new-to-her wheels!

During the Month of November we Continued to Honor our Veterans

Here's a deserving veteran and her story in her own words:

"I joined the U. S. Army’s delayed entry program in 1980, signing up while still enrolled in 11th grade classes in high school. I was allowed to leave for service right after high school graduation. I attended Basic training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. during the heat of the summer-- June, 1980. During Basic training, I earned the Sharpshooter Medal. I was trained as an Administrative Assistant.

My permanent duty station was at Ft. Hood, Texas where I served as a Legal Clerk in the 312th Military Intelligence Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division.

The most exciting time during my service was being picked up in helicopters after morning PT and flown out to the middle of nowhere before the sunrise, provided with only topographical maps and told to run back to Barracks “and don’t be late for work!”

If I had only one word to describe the reward, it would be “Resiliency”!

Congratulations to LoriAnn!

Evona's On the Road to Success...

Evona is a single mom of a teenage daughter and was working as a caregiver. Evona had to move from Pasco County to Hillsborough so she did not have such a far drive to take her daughter to the school she attended. Her job as a caregiver required her to visit her patients in their homes where she created a strong connection with her patients and their families during her time with them. During Hurricane Ian Evona contracted Covid and was out of work for two weeks. When she returned to her job the company told her she would need to go to FEMA for assistance with unemployment.

?Unfortunately, she was never able to receive her lost wages and as a result Evona lost her car. Not having a car made things nearly impossible for her to get to and from work, her daughter to and from school, and the two of them to their doctor’s appointments. The public transportation system is not the easiest to navigate as each bus has a different route and it often takes multiple buses and routes to get from one place to another. It's difficult as a caregiver traveling to your patient’s home when trying to keep to a schedule as buses often run late and do not always travel the route needed for each patient. Eventually using the public bus system led to Evona losing her job. Without a job Evona and her daughter eventually lost their housing.

Some people would have given up in this situation but not Evona! She has always looked toward the positive side of everything. Evona came to us in February 2023 having just started a new job with an organization who assists people with disabilities in their homes and communities. She had reached out to every organization she could find to locate assistance with transportation and housing. Her employer was more than happy to submit an application for her so that she could receive assistance from Wheels of Success.

We were able to present Evona with a 2008 Hyundai Tiburon in May of 2023. This car has enabled her to get to her patients’ homes easily and on time, her daughter to and from her school, and both to their doctor’s appointments. This car also provided them with shelter as they still were without housing at the time she received the vehicle. Evona has since gone to school so that she can provide her patients with extra care and one day she hopes to open a salon where she will work with clientele who have sensory issues. Evona has also just recently received her housing voucher and has moved into a new apartment providing her and her daughter a safe place to call home.

Thanks to the Baer Family Foundation for providing the funds for the repair of Evona's vehicle.

We have again been honored with a Top-Rated Award from GreatNonprofits for 2023!

Partnerships / Nuts & Bolts Club

DUE to Car Shortages and the uptick in Used Car prices, we are expanding our program to include more major car repairs as car donations are still down since the pandemic. Join our Nuts and Bolts Club to make a monthly automatic donation - no amount is too small to help cover these repair costs - $10 monthly will buy and install a battery. $25 monthly will replace a water pump. $40 monthly will buy 4 tires and balancing/alignment. $50 monthly will replace a radiator.
