Hi,
The
answer: $139.8 billion annually. That’s a staggering number that might feel
beyond any application to your business, but the point is that every customer
you don’t
retain
costs you in significant ways that could hurt your business.
There
are several factors that can influence a customer to stay or go, some of which
are outside of your control — but one is well within your control and makes a
huge difference: your
leadership.
Particularly
in challenging economic times (and we are most definitely in one of those), your
leadership decisions carry extra weight, your relationships with your clients
become more precious, and your leadership of your team becomes crucial.
You
probably know that I am all about teams — I have seen (and made!) leadership
mistakes that not only reduce team productivity and morale, but cause treasured
talent to leave, chase away loyal customers and, according to those staggering
stats, cost a business dearly in dollar terms.
One
common mistake leaders make comes out of the leadership style I talked with you
about earlier — one that DOES block leadership success, believe me!
I’m
talking about the aspect of the Command leadership model that, as the name
suggests, gives
authoritative orders, otherwise known as telling everyone what to do.
Neuroscience shows that the result of this style is a negative one: the
employee/team member loses their sense of control over their expertise, ability,
and motivation leading to a drop in productivity. Emotionally, they tend to feel
unheard, unvalued, untrustworthy, and more.
Many
women leaders don’t realize that they are falling into the Command leadership
trap, and wonder why they aren’t seeing the results they want in their teams and
business bottom line. What
they need is to learn that true leadership blends skills in “influence” as well
as “command.”
