Aside from another reason to raise
a margarita or cerveza fria,
what IS Cinco de Mayo,
anyway?
In a nutshell, it is a holiday that
commemorates the victory of the Mexican army in the battle of Puebla, on May
5th, 1862. Though it is NOT Mexican Independence Day, it still marks a time when
a small army was still able to defeat a much larger one - a beautiful testament
to the power of passion, focus, and the human spirit. So if you find yourself
facing what may look like insurmountable odds in your own personal battlefield,
let this be one more piece of evidence to demonstrate that no matter what things
may look like, if you are open and willing to find a way, there IS always a path
onward, upward & forward :). So on that note...

Time for an upgrade!
I had booked a cute little Air BnB
for our stay in Austin, TX, that had a beautiful collection of purple
prickly-pear cacti & an ocean of wildflowers in the front yard. Even though
the interior was not quite epic, in my mind, getting to wake to this wonderful
wash of color was worth it.
When we arrived, however, we were
greeted by what can only be described as a nature crime-scene: The cacti were
"melted" (in a state of utter decay) & stinking to high heaven, and the
front yard was filled with dismal, dead vegetation, all due to a recent freak
storm. My little heart sank. How could I have gone SO wrong, I thought? Me, who
was the ultra-planner, who does her homework, and who does her best to listen to
her inner compass? As silly as it may seem, I had a mini meltdown.
Long story short, I reached out to
the owner who was wonderful about the whole thing, who issued a FULL refund
(including taxes and cleaning fee), and due to the lateness of the hour when we
arrived, who also offered to have us stay free of charge until we were able to
find a new bunk.
The next day, as we started
investigating other options, we happened upon THE most spectacular hotel, the
Hyatt Regency, Austin! It was a work
of art both inside and out, was in
THE
most perfect place to get to see the nightly Austin "bat show," had an
EPIC view of Ladybird lake, had direct access to a killer trail, free hot
breakfast (Eggs Benedict, even!), was everything and MORE that I had wanted for
our Austin experience, AND...
...because the other place gifted
us with a free night, we were able to upgrade to a spectacular room!
The moral of the story is this:
Sometimes contrast (what seems like a negative thing), can actually be a gateway
to experiencing and choosing something bigger, better and even more fabulous!
What if the challenges YOU (or
someone you love) may be facing are simply just alternate paths that can and
will lead you Onward, Upward & Forward to what you REALLY want?
