PR is for Everyone—Let’s Unmask PR: It’s Not Just for the Big Shots!
You want the right kind of
publicity and you can do it TODAY. You can be the brand evangelist,
Networker and the Community God-send.
Ever heard the saying, “all publicity is good publicity”? Sounds catchy, right? But, let’s be real. Not all publicity is good for your brand. What your business needs isn’t just any publicity, but the right kind of publicity. Now, let’s shake another misbelief?—?PR is only for the big wigs and celebrity icons. Nope, not true! No matter the size of your business, from mom-and-pop shops to blooming start-ups, PR is your best friend! It’s all about managing your reputation by controlling the conversation around your brand.
Hey, You’re Doing PR and You Didn’t Even Know It!
Surprise! You might be already doing PR without even realizing it. Here’s how:
Brand Evangelists:
Your happy customers are your best PR agents. When customers rave about your business to their friends, family, or followers, they become your ‘Brand Evangelists.’ Need proof? According to BrightLocal, 85% of folks trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. So, think CrossFit?—?they’ve grown leaps and bounds, mostly because of their passionate fans sharing their fitness journey, which inspired others to hop on the bandwagon.
Networked Narrative:
If you’re sharing your company’s mission or story on any platform, you’re in the ‘Networked Narrative’ PR game. This method helps communicate your brand’s ethos to your audience. Just look at TOMS Shoes. Their “One for One” mission isn’t just a catchy slogan, it’s a powerful narrative that has customers reaching for their wallets.
Community Connectors:
By engaging in local events or sponsorships, you’re also doing PR. Becoming a ‘Community Connector’ boosts your brand’s visibility and gives you a thumbs-up from local customers. Look at Hobby Lobby, the well-loved craft store. Their name is synonymous with local craft fairs and community events.
Homework Time: Recognizing Your PR Magic
Here’s a fun activity. Sit back and reflect on your business. Are there ways you’re already dabbling in PR without knowing it? These could be simple things like how you chat with customers, your engagement online, or the way you share your company’s journey. Identify three ways your business is already engaged in PR. This will give you a clearer understanding of how PR fits into your business and how you can leverage it better.
Give this a shot:
One way my business is already involved in PR is ________________.
A customer promoted my business by ___________________________.
I shared my company’s mission statement on ______________________.
