Gender heritage has many stories for us: Don’t go after the
job unless you’re 100% capable; don’t ask for a raise or stand up for yourself,
you can’t apply for THAT job or lead THAT project because the men always get it,
you have to be THAT leader (male-centric leadership model) in order to succeed,
etc.
These
messages have nothing to do with your vision, capabilities, expectations or
value — UNLESS you let them hold you back.
Action
step recap to launch the new year: Debunk those myths that are holding you back
— so you can become your OWN VERSION of an extraordinary leader.
- Take
some time to look back at your history and write down 2-3 times when a story you
told yourself (unconsciously) held you back.
- Think
about (or journal on) what you did, the mistakes you made in that situation,
perhaps the opportunities you missed.
- Now
look at whether that story is actually true or not, and what you could have done
differently.
- Go
forward into 2021, and DO make mistakes, just remember those myths you now can
debunk, learn from your mistakes so you don’t repeat them, and move on stronger
than ever!
