People are all around us and we interact with others every day. Whether you are online, on the phone or in person, our intersections with each other create ripple effects with unknown (and sometimes unexpected) consequences.
Many success specialists from Dale Carnegie to Jack Canfield remind us that, to become successful in bringing our vision to life, it is key to surround yourself with successful and positive people.
Are you called to a higher purpose? What vision are you bringing to life?
When talking with Coach Quornesha S. Lemon on how this applies for her and her clients, she points out that it helps to have a strong sense of perception. By being alert to the emotional tone of others, it is easier to communicate and navigate negotiations and relationships to create better results for yourself and others.
Likewise, choosing colleagues and co-workers who resonate with you, whether you are having a phone call or hanging out, can help create an atmosphere of positive energy that extends into all areas of your work and life.
Lemon recommends that being busy, even when you are not busy, is useful for handling negative people. No matter what it is, if you are occupied when a negative person calls, you will have an option to keep your conversation short, minimizing negativity and allowing you to stay focused on higher priorities.
The more you focus on positive action, instead of problems, the more you will create positive results. Spending your time with positive people will have the same impact, fueling your ideas and insights for getting what you want.
You cannot raise your awareness when your surroundings don't match what you are trying to achieve. It's like expecting to make a sale but opening your doors late. Whoever you surround yourself with, from staff to networking associates, you are fueling your success (or lack thereof) with their emotional energy as well as your own.
One of the challenges for successful entrepreneurs is bringing their surroundings and environment into alignment with the success they are seeking. In other words, if you want to have thoughts that are empowering, surround yourself with empowering people. You will feed each other, creating more success for all of you.
As you step onto the bridge from where you are to where you want to be, you are likely to have days when it feels like you are faking it. We all want to get beyond covering our thoughts with positive words. You want your actions, emotional energy, and words to align with whatever you are envisioning. The more empathic (empathetic?) you are, the more you are likely to absorb from others. If your co-worker is hurting or stressed, you may start to feel stressed as well.
On a daily basis, consider where you will be and create balance for yourself. Whether it is social media, a social gathering or a hospital or funeral, where will you be? Can you also spend time somewhere that is uplifting? Find the social media platform that is best for you… Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or… All of these have different energetic signatures. For example, going to New York City, may not be a place for you on a typical day. “Just simply walking on Skid Row, shook my soul,” says Lemon as she considers the cities where she can be at her best.
We all have occasions when we may have to go somewhere we know will be difficult. You may be thinking, "I've got to go to this party, church, meeting." We always have choices as to where to go and how long to stay there. Sometimes, it’s simply that we don’t want to deal with the consequences of our decisions and, sometimes, we are surprised by the consequences when we do what we know to be right for ourselves.
If you are particularly sensitive, it is important to remember that what you are feeling may have nothing to do with how you feel, and that you may be picking up on the feelings of others in the room.
Here are some tips for keeping yourself in a positive place for creating the results you seek:
- Be selective in your surroundings. You don't have to be everything to everyone.
- Release outdated thoughts, habits or patterns that you know aren’t yielding positive energy. The best way to do this is to prepare yourself for each new stage as you step into higher success. Too much time spent trying to please others is likely to keep you where you are; time spent pleasing yourself can fuel your progress more quickly. Even Jesus says, “Love others as you love yourself,” implying that it is critical to love yourself.
- Be sure your choices, from what you watch and listen to, to what you eat and drink, support you in reaching your goals as well.
Emotional energy is powerful and is all around us. Allow your emotional strength to blossom rather than letting others to take it from you. Be pulled toward positive people, by shifting your environment and aligning your life with new actions and energy on a daily basis.
