Lloyd
Price, is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is known for his hit
songs “Lawdy Miss Clawdy,” "Personality’’ and ‘’Stagger Lee.”
Yet,
most people do not know that Lloyd Price is also an entrepreneur and great
businessman! He signed his first record deal when he was a teenager and his
first song became a national hit.
Price
eventually bought out the contract from the record company and released all the
other hits on his own record label. He took the money from music and became a
real estate developer and built over 150 homes in New York.
Price
went on to open restaurants and night clubs and helped boxing promoter, Don
King, to secure the funding for the “Rumble in the Jungle” with Muhammad Ali and
George Foreman. He produced television specials for PBS and documentary films of
his work with Ali and Don King.
He
then started a food company and wrote a popular book about his life and lessons
he learned, entitled, Lawdy
Miss Clawdy: The True King of the 50's: the Lloyd Price Story.
In
this powerful interview for my Sirius XM show, Lloyd Price shared these lessons
about life and business:
- Be
proactive! Don't wait for success to come to you. You must go to it.
- Don't
wait for your breaks, make your own.
- Sign
yourself and your talent to your own company. Be the CEO of Y.O.U. Inc.
- Don't
get caught up in being a star. You must see the music business for what it
is...a business!
- You
must learn to do business. If you don't do business, you won't be in business
long.
- Every
dollar you get is not really a dollar you can keep, but actually 63¢ (the
government is going to get theirs), so make that part of your business model.
- Don't
let the fact that you do not have an MBA or degree in finance stop you from
growing your finances and your wealth.
- Keep
learning and expanding your thinking and your knowledge.
- Look
for opportunities (they are all around) and then get moving on them!
- Common
sense is necessary for your success, yet common sense is not that common! So
keep learning!
