That will NEVER Work! - Birth of Netflix
Here's
my weekly newsletter
My
SiriusXM Wealthy Ways Show guest this week is Marc Randolph, the cofounder of
Netflix and its very first CEO.
| |
Marc
was the creator of the concept and branded the name “Netflix.”
Marc
is a serial tech entrepreneur who founded seven companies, including
Netflix. | |
He
was working for a small sheet music company, where he was tasked with processing
mail orders. He expanded that operation from phone orders to designing a direct
mail operation.
When
computers became a part of the work environment, Marc started his own very
successful direct mail order company.
Ultimately
selling that business, he connected with another tech entrepreneur named Reed
Hastings.
One
day, during their daily commute to work, Marc shared an idea with Hastings about
sending videos through the mail! That was the birth of an idea that disrupted
the movie and video industry.
Many
said it would not work, but Randolph and Hastings proved them wrong.
Marc
Randolph details his struggles and results in his best-selling book entitled, That
Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea.
In
this amazing interview, Marc Randolph shares 12 concepts to embolden your
entrepreneurial spirit:
- "It
will never work” is a phrase many big thinkers hear a lot. Don’t listen to them
(the naysayers).
- Keep
tinkering, keep working and keep figuring out how to make it work!
- The
companies that survive and thrive are willing to not only be disruptive but
understand the importance of constantly disrupting themselves.
- Make
a point to disrupt yourself and ask yourself everyday, “What can I do today to
get better and what can I do in a better way?”
- The
best entrepreneurs learn what they are good at and focus on those few things;
then let others do the things they know they’re not good at.
- Learn
to delegate! Do what only you can do, create what only you can create, then
delegate the rest.
- Lots
of people have dreams and good ideas, but successful people act in a different
way that separates them from those who only dream...they start!
- To
really win, you must take action on your dreams and ideas.
- Then
once you start, you must commit to persist.
- And
when the going gets tough, decide that quitting is not an option.
- There
are tough times with any business, but when in a tough spot, know that often the
only way out is going through that challenge.
- Learn
to be resourceful and creative. Use all of your positive thinking and positive
action to make your dream into a reality!

I
am truly amazed by the overwhelming response to my speaking engagements for
Black History Month this year.
Reflecting
on my remarkable experiences of last year, especially being honored as the first
African American man to receive the prestigious Cavett Award in the speaking
industry, I can't help but acknowledge the historical significance.
In
my Black History messages, I emphasize the profound influence of my parents, who
instilled in me the importance of relentlessly pursuing excellence. Their wisdom
echoes the sentiment of Dr. King, urging us to approach our endeavors with the
same dedication and passion that great artists applied to their crafts.
He
was right when he said, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should
sweep streets like Michelangelo
painted, Beethoven composed music and Shakespeare wrote poetry.”
Dr.
King's words inspire us to embody excellence in every role, reinforcing the idea
that regardless of our profession, we should strive for greatness daily.
My
parents' guidance resonates with truth – pursue excellence, for it consistently
yields the most rewarding dividends.
If
you would like for me to speak at your organization's Black History Month
events, please give me a call at (202)
