The Amazing Impact of Service
Hi,
This
has been an amazing past couple of weeks.
First,
I received the highest award in the speaking industry, The Cavett. I'm still
overwhelmed and grateful. I was so shocked when my name was called (it's a
secret award and no one knows who will get it – not even the recipient). I was
so surprised, I had to gather myself before I could move from my seat! You can
watch the video footage here. | |
I
want to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to everyone who sent me messages
of congratulations. Thank You! Thank You! Thank you!
In
addition, I am very honored to be the first African American man to receive this
award. And I keep telling my team now I really need to serve bigger!

I
think of the incredible message that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. shared in his
Drum Major Instinct Sermon.
He
said:
“There
is a new definition of greatness….He who serves others can be great! If you want
to be important – wonderful. If you want to be recognized – wonderful. If you
want to be great – wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you
shall be your servant. That's a new definition of greatness. And it means that
everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a
college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree
to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't
have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know
the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You
only need a heart full of grace, and a soul generated by love. And you can be
that servant.You can be
great!" | |
So
now, I'm excited about what's possible for the future. And I encourage everyone
to do what I'm committing to do…and that is to serve at a bigger, greater
level.
In
my acceptance speech, I mentioned that we must Lead, Feed and Seed (which was an
excerpt of the message I gave when I received the Presidential Lifetime
Achievement Award in January (you can see that full speech at WinWithWillie.com).
The
world is in great need of inspiration and uplift. And we all can do something to
help! | |
We
can lead and make a commitment to become servant leaders. We can feed by
mentoring and pouring into others and helping them grow by using what we know.
And we can seed, which is to drop seeds of hope and encouragement in others,
even people we don’t know, by speaking good into them and their futures. This
happened to me when I was struggling early in my career, and an older gentleman
told me that he was 88 years old and his best was still yet to come…and so was
mine!
Once
again, I am very grateful for the Cavett Award and I want to thank everyone who
has sent me messages and emails. In lieu of me trying to respond to every
message,I'd like to say here that I appreciate you.
The
second amazing thing that's happened during these last couple of weeks is that I
signed an agreement with Walmart to be a part of their Walmart Radio network.
My
messages will be airing in over 11,000 Walmart and Sam’s Club’s stores. So keep
your ears open when you go into a Walmart!
May
God bless you and keep
you! | |
