Harvey Mackay's Real-life Tips for Winning
My SiriusXM Show guests this week
is Harvey Mackay.
Harvey Mackay is a seven-time, New York Times
best-selling author of Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive,
and Beware the Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt. According to the New
York Times, both books are among the top 15 inspirational business books of all
time.
Harvey McKay is also a nationally syndicated
columnist, with his weekly articles appearing in nearly 100 newspapers across
the country. Plus his books have sold 10 million copies worldwide!
At age 27, Harvey Mackay purchased a small, failing
envelope company that he has grown to a $100 million business – the
MackayMitchell Envelope Company. They currently employ over 450 people.
As chairman, Harvey’s philosophy is engrained in
the company, beginning with its motto: “Do what you love, love what you do and
deliver more than you
promise.” |

Harvey McKay believes that if you embrace
the following 13 concepts, you’re on your way to more a successful
you. |
- Successful people have mentors. Harvey’s his
father was his mentor. You can’t do it by yourself. Even the Lone Ranger needed
Tonto by his side. Having mentors is how you can learn from the privacy of your
own home and get better.
- It’s impossible not to be successful, if you say
to every person you meet, what you will do for them and ask nothing in
return.
- You must knock on doors, make presentations, get
“Nos” on the phone. From rejection you get better.
- 67% of all jobs come from networking. If you
network for a long time, you cannot help but be successful.
- Downsizing. Human engineering happens at work.
Getting a job is a job! The average college graduate today will have 10-14 job
changes by age 38, and 3-4 career changes. This is perpetual job
changing.
Note: When you
don’t have a job, it can take 6 months or more to find another. So, find a job
NOW while you have a job; surround yourself with winnings friends to bounce
ideas off of. Make sure you USE the information they give you. Knowledge is not
power without action.
- Your network is how you stay motivated. Read
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.
- Dig your well before you start
drinking.
- Your chances of success GO UP exponentially over
a lifetime of work. Remember, cream works its way to the top; it doesn’t rise
to the top!
- Every time you shake a hand, ask what you can do
for that person, asking nothing in return.
- Let people you know that you’re looking for your
next thing.
- Don’t let your pride poison your prosperity. You
must be willing to ASK to GET. It doesn’t make you weak to ask for help, it
helps to make you strong.
- There are more people in the world willing to
help you than there are people who are asking for help. People help others due
to chemistry and people skills.
- Become a lifelong learner with coaches. Harvey
McKay has 15 coaches (writing coach, speech coach, tennis coach, golf coach,
etc.). We need the coaches to help us move up, get sharper, focused, and get
better.
