Selfie Obsession: The 6-Tip Success Story that Got Me on TV — And Can Do the Same for You!

I love acronyms! I used some celebrity connections and some simple ideas to land on TV shows talking about how to do SELFIES! ‘6 Tips for Better Selfies and Facebook Live Videos.’


In a world dominated by social media and digital communication, the selfie has become a new form of self-expression. They’re everywhere, from your best friend’s Instagram feed to the profiles of top celebrities. Did you know that Snoop Dogg has taken more selfies than any other celebrity, including the notorious selfie queen Kim Kardashian?

My fascination with this selfie obsession became an opportunity — a concept I turned into ‘6 Tips for Better Selfies and Facebook Live Videos.’ This simple but powerful idea has not only improved countless people’s selfie game but also landed me a spot on several television shows. And today, I’m going to share how you too can turn your ideas into a golden ticket to TV exposure.

When I was formulating my concept, I realized that taking a selfie isn’t just about pointing your camera at your face and clicking the button. It’s an art that can be broken down into six essential components —

Smile,

Eye Contact,

Light,

Framing and Format,

Inviting,

Energy and Engagement.

Turning these components into a simple, memorable acronym — ‘SELFIE’ — made it easy for people to remember and apply the tips.

My ‘6 Tips for Better Selfies’ got me noticed because it addressed a popular trend with a practical, easy-to-follow guide. So, if you’re looking to get your ideas noticed, here are a few key lessons from my journey:

  1. Identify a Popular Trend: The selfie trend was on the rise when I created my ‘6 Tips.’ Find a trend or topic that resonates with a broad audience.
  2. Simplify Your Concept: My ‘SELFIE’ acronym made my concept simple and memorable. Try to present your ideas in a way that’s easy to understand and remember.
  3. Present a Clear Benefit: Each of my tips helped improve a specific aspect of taking selfies, giving clear benefits to the user. Your idea should present a clear, valuable benefit to the audience.
  4. Establish Authority: As a professor who pioneered the social media certification program at Florida Gulf Coast University, my background lent credibility to my concept. Establish yourself as an expert in your field.
  5. Promote Your Idea: I talked about my ‘6 Tips’ everywhere — in my classes, on social media, at speaking engagements. Make sure to promote your idea on every platform available to you.
