Our interactions, whether for business or social, beg the question, Are You Inclusive Enough? Some believe they do everything possible but sometimes overlook elements that are missing. No one is perfect; however, we can strive to change.
Inclusion is an essential element of business success. Upon welcoming people from varying countries and heritage, there is so much more we can learn by including their insights. Occasionally, differences in opinion will occur. But when we strive to learn about each other’s experiences, additional insights come to light that can change our initial thought—making the practice a habit can significantly extend our thinking and future outcomes for the better.
The topic arises because inclusion is sometimes on the surface without thought supporting it. One example is that of a team I recently encountered. It is startling to realize that all the female players appear required to have a cosmetic survey. Worse, it seems all the females are to wear the same hairstyle - the opposite of diversity and inclusion. It isn’t very likely the same is true for men.
We know that depending upon heritage, some people have thick hair while others have thin hair. Some hair is curly, some typically braided, while others are straight. Generally, it all depends upon genetics. Yet, it appears that the executives for the same team require all the women to have the same hairstyle. That goes directly against diversity and inclusion.
The topic of hairstyle is only one tiny piece in the entire corporate array of how they implement diversity and inclusion. There may be many more ‘errors’ in the same vein. A better move is for all business to review their policies and practices to seek out oversights and errors on behalf of employees.
For those who do not work in corporate, consider your interactions as you meet someone who dresses or looks different from you. Is your initial response welcoming to learn more, or do you dismiss the person as quickly as possible? If the latter, today may be the perfect time to change habits.
Self-examination of habits and typical procedures will reveal much. The willingness to revise and improve practices will go a long way in improving relationships. The bonus will be building a more robust business and growing a respected brand.
Success begins with the willingness to change. What will you change before year-end? Write it out, set new goals, and enjoy the ride to new adventures. Upon taking the higher road as you change direction, the journey into the unknown will likely be far more rewarding!
